Key takeaways
  • The 2026-27 NBA season started on 20 October 2026. The regular season ends on 11 April 2027, the play-in runs 13 to 16 April and the playoffs start on 17 April.
  • FanDuel and DraftKings lead on player props and same-game parlays, and bet365 often has sharper spreads and strong live betting.
  • Late injury and rest news moves NBA lines more than any other factor, and the league has restricted some player prop markets this season.
  • You can trade NBA contracts on prediction markets, but the NBA had not announced an official deal with those platforms when we last checked.

NBA betting is a near-daily market: 30 teams, 82 games each, props on every player and prices that swing with every injury report. This page covers the 2026-27 calendar, how NBA lines work, the rules for odd situations, the best sportsbooks and apps, and tips. It is part of our basketball betting hub, which also covers March Madness and the other leagues.

How NBA betting works

The point spread is the main NBA market, usually priced near −110 on both sides. Totals depend on pace and injuries. Player props such as points, rebounds, assists and threes fuel same-game parlays. Learn the basics in moneyline, spread and totals and how betting odds work.

Unlike the NFL, basketball has no strong key numbers: scores are high and margins are spread out, so the extra half-point matters less. What matters more is who plays.

Reading an NBA line

A typical listing (illustrative prices, not live odds):

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Boston Celtics−6.5 (−110)−260Over 224.5 (−110)
Detroit Pistons+6.5 (−110)+215Under 224.5 (−110)
  • Spread: Boston must win by 7 or more for −6.5 to win. Detroit +6.5 wins if Detroit wins or loses by 6 or fewer. A half-point means no push.
  • Moneyline: $100 on Detroit at +215 returns $315. $260 on Boston wins $100.
  • Total: the combined score of both teams, overtime included.
  • −110: you need to win 52.4% of bets at this price to break even.

Convert any price with the odds converter and remove the margin with the no-vig calculator.

Series prices ("Celtics to win 4 to 2") are popular in the playoffs.

What moves NBA lines

  • Injuries and rest. Teams report player status the day before a game and again on game day. One star sitting out can move a spread by several points.
  • Back-to-backs and travel. Teams on the second night of a back-to-back often rest players. The Paris and Manchester games add long trips.
  • Pace and style. Fast teams push totals up; two slow, defensive teams push them down.
  • Trade deadline and the stretch run. Rosters change on 11 February, and teams with nothing to play for may rest players late in the season.
  • The playoffs. Rotations tighten and stars play more minutes, so props and totals behave differently from the regular season.

Rules for special situations

Rules differ by sportsbook. This shows what to look for in the house rules, not a promise.

OvertimeSpread, moneyline and totals include overtimeMarket rules on the bet slip
Player prop, player inactiveUsually void and refundedPlayer prop rules

The NBA has been working with its sportsbook partners to remove some player prop markets seen as easy to manipulate, such as certain combinations of "under" selections and props on players with limited expected minutes. See NBA tightens player prop rules. Expect a smaller prop menu on some games.

Best NBA betting sites

We rank sportsbooks on the same five criteria as the rest of the site (odds value, markets and live betting, payouts, safety and licence, app and support). Scores come from published terms, regulator records and independent reporting, not from our own real-money tests. The full method is in How we rate.

  1. FanDuel (9.2): best overall US app, with a very deep NBA prop menu and the best same-game parlay builder. Downside: standard −110 lines and stake limits on winning accounts.
  2. DraftKings (9.0): the widest prop menu, in the most states, with frequent boosts. Downside: standard −110 pricing on most lines.
  3. bet365 (9.0): often sharper odds and strong live betting. Downside: fewer US states than FanDuel and DraftKings.
  4. BetMGM (8.7): a big first-bet refund in bonus bets and MGM Rewards. Downside: bonus bets, not cash.
  5. Fanatics (8.5): a clean, fast app with FanCash rewards. Downside: a smaller market menu.
  6. Caesars (8.4): good for Caesars Rewards members. Downside: pricing is often a little worse than rivals.

Compare all of them in our best betting sites ranking. Offers change by state and week, so read the terms in the app.

Best NBA betting apps

  • Props and same-game parlays: FanDuel for the builder, DraftKings for the widest menu.
  • Live betting: bet365, known for in-play depth and streaming to funded accounts where rights allow.
  • Simplicity: Fanatics is the cleanest app for new bettors.
  • Rewards: BetMGM and Caesars suit people who already earn points at their casinos.
  • Line shopping: with games almost every night, two or three apps help you find the best number; see value betting.

Only use an app licensed in your state. About 39 states plus DC had some form of legal sports betting in October 2026; see US sports betting states.

Betting on the NBA outside the US

Most licensed bookmakers abroad cover the NBA. In the UK and Ireland, Betway, Unibet and William Hill list every game. In Ontario, bet365 and BetMGM use American odds. Tip-off times can be late at night in Europe, and live odds move fast. Use the odds converter to switch formats, and check that the operator is licensed where you live.

NBA betting tips

These habits reduce mistakes. None guarantees a profit, and most bettors lose over time.

  1. Check injury reports before every bet, and again close to tip-off.
  2. Watch back-to-backs and travel, where tired teams and resting stars matter more than in most sports.
  3. Bet player props either early or late, before news moves the line or once lineups are confirmed, not in between.
  4. Track pace, because it drives totals.
  5. Know the prop rules for inactive players before you bet.
  6. Keep same-game parlays small. Each leg multiplies the risk; see what is a parlay.
  7. Set a weekly budget with bankroll management. With games every night, it is easy to overspend.

NBA prediction markets

You can also trade NBA results on prediction markets. Instead of betting against a sportsbook, you buy a $1 contract such as "Will the Knicks win?" from other traders. At 55¢ the market gives them about a 55% chance; if they win it pays $1, if not nothing. You can sell before the game ends, and you pay a visible fee instead of a built-in margin.

As of our last check the NBA had not announced an official deal with Kalshi or Polymarket, although talks were reported in 2026, and its commissioner has said the league looks at prediction markets much as it looks at sports betting. Prices, fees, settlement rules and legality are in our guide to NBA prediction markets, and the wider picture is in sports event contracts.

FAQ: nba betting

When does the 2026-27 NBA season start and end?

The regular season began on Tuesday 20 October 2026 and ends on Sunday 11 April 2027. The play-in tournament runs 13 to 16 April and the playoffs begin on 17 April. The league had not published the NBA Finals dates when we last checked.

What are the main NBA betting markets?

The point spread, moneyline and total (over/under) are the main ones. Player props (points, rebounds, assists, threes), same-game parlays, live betting and futures such as the champion and MVP are also popular.

Do NBA bets include overtime?

Yes. NBA games cannot end in a tie, so spread, moneyline and total bets include overtime. Quarter and half bets settle only on the period you bet on.

What happens to my player prop if the player doesn't play?

Most sportsbooks void the prop and refund the stake if the player is inactive or doesn't enter the game. Rules differ if a player plays only a few minutes, so check the book's prop rules.

Why do NBA lines move so much?

Mostly injury and rest news. Teams report player status the day before and on game day, and one star sitting out can move a spread by several points.

What is the NBA play-in tournament?

A short tournament for the teams that finish 7th to 10th in each conference. The 7th and 8th seeds play for the 7th playoff seed, the 9th and 10th seeds play to stay alive, and the loser of the first game gets a second chance against the winner of the second.

Which is the best NBA betting app?

FanDuel is our top pick for most bettors, thanks to its app and same-game parlay builder. DraftKings has the widest prop menu and bet365 is strong for live betting. Availability depends on your state.

Can I trade NBA games on prediction markets?

Yes, on Kalshi and other platforms in states where they are available. See NBA prediction markets for prices, fees and rules.
