Hockey Betting

The NHL is the most important hockey betting market, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Final are the biggest events. Outdoor games, the All-Star Game and the Olympics are smaller. FanDuel, DraftKings and bet365 are our top sportsbooks for hockey.

Hockey is a long betting season: the NHL from 29 September to 10 April, then the Stanley Cup Playoffs until June. Here are the events that matter most, how the leagues differ and where to bet.

How betting on hockey works

Every hockey league uses the same core markets. The moneyline is the main one, the puck line (±1.5) is hockey's spread, totals bet on combined goals, and player props and same-game parlays sit on top; see moneyline, spread and totals and how betting odds work. Because hockey is low-scoring and one-goal games are common, the starting goalie and overtime rules matter more than in most sports.

What changes between leagues is the number of games, the overtime rules, the depth of the markets and how much sportsbooks let you bet. That is why we give the NHL its own page.

Which hockey events matter most for betting

The table ranks events by how much betting interest they attract, from our reading of sportsbook menus, promotions and press coverage. We do not have official handle figures per event.

Where to bet on hockey

These are the sportsbooks we rate highest for hockey. Scores come from published terms, regulator records and independent reporting, not our own real-money tests, and each one is only available in states where it is licensed.

  • FanDuel: best overall US app, with full NHL menus and a top same-game parlay builder.
  • DraftKings: available in the most states, with deep props.
  • bet365: often sharper odds, strong live betting and European hockey.
  • BetMGM, Fanatics and Caesars: good if you want their rewards programmes.

Compare them all in our best betting sites ranking. Our NHL betting page ranks them for the NHL and covers the best apps.

Hockey prediction markets

You can also trade hockey results on prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket, instead of betting against a sportsbook. The NHL is the first major US league to partner with both. Prices, fees, settlement rules and legality are in our guide to NHL prediction markets, and the general picture is in sports event contracts.

Hockey betting tips

These habits reduce mistakes. None guarantees a profit, and most bettors lose over time.

  1. Confirm the starting goalie before you bet.
  2. Know what you are betting on. Moneylines include overtime and the shootout, and 60-minute markets don't.
  3. Use the puck line carefully. Favourites at −1.5 pay more, but one-goal wins lose the bet.
  4. Shop between sportsbooks. Keep two or three accounts and compare before every bet.
  5. Keep same-game parlays small. Each leg multiplies the risk; see what is a parlay.
  6. Be careful in the playoffs, where upsets are common and there is no shootout.
  7. Set a weekly budget with bankroll management.

Hockey Betting FAQ

Is the NHL the only hockey league you can bet on?

No. Sportsbooks also list the AHL, college hockey, European leagues such as the SHL and Liiga, the KHL and international tournaments. The NHL is by far the biggest market and the Stanley Cup Playoffs are the biggest event.

What are the biggest hockey events to bet on?

The Stanley Cup Playoffs and Final, which run from 13 April 2027 to 19 June 2027 at the latest. Outdoor games such as the Winter Classic on 31 December, the All-Star Weekend on 5 and 6 February and international tournaments are smaller markets.

When is hockey season?

The 2026-27 NHL season began on 29 September 2026 and the regular season ends on 10 April 2027. The Stanley Cup Playoffs start on 13 April and the NHL Draft is on 25 and 26 June 2027.

Why is hockey betting different?

Scores are low and one goal often decides a game, so the moneyline and puck line are priced differently from other sports. Goalies, overtime and the shootout matter a lot, and playoff overtime has no shootout.

Can I bet on European hockey and the KHL?

Some sportsbooks list them, but menus are smaller and limits are lower than for the NHL. Bookmakers with European coverage, such as Unibet and bet365, offer the most.

How do I bet on hockey?

Pick a licensed sportsbook in your state, deposit, and choose a game. Start with the moneyline or puck line, and learn the markets in our moneyline, spread and totals guide.
