Horse Racing Betting

For horse racing, William Hill and bet365 are strongest in the UK and Ireland (with Best Odds Guaranteed on many races); in the US, racing is mostly bet through dedicated advance-deposit wagering apps and some state sportsbooks.

The oldest betting sport in the world, with its own language. Here's how racing bets work on both sides of the Atlantic.

Pari-mutuel vs fixed odds

  • Pari-mutuel (US and tote): all bets go into a pool; the track takes a cut and the rest is shared among winners. Your final odds aren't known until the race starts.
  • Fixed odds (UK and Ireland): you lock in a price when you bet. Many UK bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed.

Win, place and show (US), or each-way (UK) — use our each-way calculator. Exotics like exactas and trifectas pay big for predicting the order.

How pari-mutuel payouts work

In US pari-mutuel betting, the track takes a takeout — typically around 15–18% of win, place and show pools and up to about 25% on exotics — before sharing the rest among winning tickets. The tote board odds change until the gates open, so the price you see when you bet may not be the price you get.

Betting on racing legally in the US

US racing bets are placed through advance deposit wagering (ADW) apps such as TwinSpires or FanDuel Racing, which are legal in most states — including some without legal sportsbooks. Check your state's rules before you sign up.

Where to bet on racing

  • William Hill — a UK racing institution.
  • bet365 — deep racing coverage and streaming.
  • Betway — racing in its international markets.

In the US, racing is regulated differently from other sports; check what's legal in your state. Full ranking: best betting sites.

Horse Racing Betting FAQ

What is an each-way bet?

Two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet. If the horse wins, both pay; if it only places, the place part pays a fraction (often 1/4 or 1/5) of the odds.

What is Best Odds Guaranteed?

A UK bookmaker offer: if you take a fixed price and the starting price ends up bigger, you're paid at the bigger price.

How is horse racing bet in the US?

Mostly through pari-mutuel pools at tracks and advance-deposit wagering (ADW) apps; fixed-odds racing is available in a few states.

What are the biggest races to bet on?

In the US, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont (Triple Crown) and the Breeders' Cup; in the UK and Ireland, Cheltenham, the Grand National and Royal Ascot.
