- The 2026 NFL season runs from 9 September 2026 to Super Bowl LXI on 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium.
- FanDuel and DraftKings lead on props, same-game parlays and app quality, bet365 often has sharper spreads, and BetMGM suits bigger first bets.
- Spread and total bets normally include overtime, and player props are usually void if the player is inactive. Rules differ by sportsbook.
- You can also trade NFL results on prediction markets, but the NFL opposes some contracts and several states are challenging them.
NFL betting is the biggest part of American football betting: a dozen games on a Sunday, prop markets for every player and the most bet-on single game of the year. This page covers the 2026-27 calendar, how NFL lines work, the rules for odd situations, the best sportsbooks and apps, and tips. It is part of our American football betting hub, which also covers college football and the smaller leagues.

How NFL betting works
The point spread dominates NFL betting. Because so many games end by 3 (a field goal) or 7 (a touchdown), half-points around those numbers are valuable; see moneyline, spread and totals. Totals move with weather and pace, and player props fuel the hugely popular same-game parlays.
Lines open early in the week, move with injury news and betting action, and settle by kick-off. Learn how and why in line movement explained and sharp vs square.
Reading an NFL line
A typical game listing looks like this (illustrative prices, not live odds):
| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo Bills | +3 (−110) | +140 | Over 47.5 (−110) |
| Kansas City Chiefs | −3 (−110) | −165 | Under 47.5 (−110) |
- Spread: Kansas City must win by 4 or more for a −3 bet to win; a 3-point win is a push (stake returned). Buffalo +3 wins if Buffalo wins or loses by 1 or 2.
- −110: bet $110 to win $100. You need to win 52.4% of these bets to break even.
- Moneyline: just pick the winner; $100 on Buffalo at +140 returns $240.
- Total: bet on 48 or more combined points (over) or 47 or fewer (under).

NFL betting markets explained
| Bet | Example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Point spread | Eagles −6.5 | Half-points around 3 and 7 |
| Moneyline | Lions +180 | Best for underdogs you expect to win outright |
| Total | Over 44.5 | Wind affects passing and kicking more than rain does |
| Player props | Over 249.5 passing yards | Injury reports, opponent defence, game script |
| Same-game parlay | Win + QB 2+ TDs + over | Legs are correlated, and the book's margin is higher than on single bets |
| Teaser | Two teams, each moved 6 points | Value mainly when the move crosses 3 and 7 (for example +1.5 to +7.5) |
| Live betting | Next drive, next score | Prices move every play; see live betting |
| Futures | Super Bowl winner | Money is tied up for months; compare prices across books |
What moves NFL lines
- Quarterback news. A change at quarterback can move a spread by several points, more than any other single injury.
- Injury reports. Teams publish status reports during the week and the final designations come on Friday for Sunday games. Inactive lists follow about 90 minutes before kick-off.
- Weather. Strong wind cuts passing and field-goal accuracy, so totals often drop on windy days. Rain matters less.
- Rest and travel. Thursday games follow a short week, and the nine international games add long travel. Neither effect is guaranteed to be priced in.
- Schedule spots. Week 18 is all division games, where teams know each other well, and some teams rest starters once the playoffs are settled.
Rules for special situations
Rules differ by sportsbook, so treat this as a guide to what to look for in the house rules, not a promise.
| Situation | What usually happens | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Game goes to overtime | Spread and totals include overtime | Market rules on the bet slip |
| Game ends in a tie | Moneyline bets are usually refunded; spread and totals settle on the final score | House rules for ties |
| Game postponed or suspended | Bets are void if the game is not completed within a set window, often 24 to 48 hours | Sportsbook general rules |
| Player prop, player inactive | Usually void and refunded | Player prop rules |
| Player prop, injured in game | Usually stands if the player took the field, with exceptions | Player prop rules, injury protection promos |
| Stat correction after the game | Most books settle on the official NFL stats, and may use later corrections | Stat source named in the rules |
Some books add protection: see sportsbooks injury refunds for how FanDuel, Fanatics and DraftKings handled it in 2026.
Best NFL betting sites
We rank sportsbooks on the same five criteria as everywhere else on the site (odds value, markets and live betting, payouts, safety and licence, app and support). Scores come from published terms, regulator records and independent reporting, not from our own real-money tests. The full method is in How we rate.
- FanDuel (9.2): best overall US app, with the deepest NFL prop menu and the best same-game parlay builder. Downside: standard −110 lines and stake limits on winning accounts.
- DraftKings (9.0): available in the most states, strong props and promos, and Early Exit insurance for injured players. Downside: standard −110 pricing on most lines, and limits for bettors flagged as sharp.
- bet365 (9.0): often sharper spreads and strong live betting, available in about 17 US states and worldwide. Downside: fewer states than the other two.
- BetMGM (8.7): a first-bet refund up to $1,500 in bonus bets, which suits larger first stakes, and MGM Rewards. Downside: bonus bets, not cash.
- Fanatics (8.5): a clean, fast app with FanCash rewards and Fair Play injury protection. Downside: a smaller market menu than FanDuel or DraftKings.
- Caesars (8.4): good if you already use Caesars Rewards. Downside: pricing is often a little worse than rivals, and payouts take 1 to 3 days.
Compare all of them, with current offers, in our best betting sites ranking. Offers change by state and week, so read the terms in the app.
Best NFL betting apps
All six books above have iOS and Android apps. Which one is best depends on how you bet:
- Same-game parlays and props: FanDuel has our top-rated builder and app, and DraftKings has the widest prop lists.
- Live betting: bet365 is known for in-play depth and streaming to funded accounts where rights allow.
- Simplicity: Fanatics is the cleanest app for new bettors.
- Rewards: BetMGM and Caesars fit people who already earn points at their casinos.
- Line shopping: keep two or three apps. A half-point on a key number is worth more than most welcome offers; see value betting.
Only use an app licensed in the state where you are. In October 2026 about 39 states plus DC had some form of legal sports betting; see US sports betting states.
Betting on the NFL outside the US
NFL betting is open at most licensed bookmakers abroad. In the UK and Ireland, Betway, Unibet and William Hill cover every game. In Canada, bet365 and BetMGM operate in Ontario, where they use American odds. Odds formats differ, so the odds converter is handy. Check that the operator is licensed where you live.
NFL betting tips
These are habits that reduce mistakes. None of them guarantees a profit, and most bettors lose over time.
- Shop for the half-point. +3.5 against +3 is worth far more than most price differences.
- Wait for the final injury news if your bet depends on one player, and know that waiting can cost you a better number.
- Don't overrate one week. Teams play 17 games, and one blowout says less than it seems.
- Keep same-game parlays small. Each leg multiplies the risk; see why parlays are so popular.
- Know the break-even rate. At −110 you need 52.4% winners; the Kelly calculator helps size stakes if you have a real edge.
- Set a weekly budget with bankroll management, and stop when it's gone.
- Track your bets. Without records you cannot tell skill from luck.
NFL prediction markets
You can also trade NFL results on prediction markets. Instead of betting against a sportsbook, you buy a $1 contract such as "Will the Chiefs win?" from other traders. At 64¢ the market gives them about a 64% chance; if they win it pays $1, if not nothing. You can sell before the final whistle, and you pay a visible fee instead of a built-in margin.
The NFL has asked these platforms to drop contracts it sees as integrity risks, and several states are challenging sports contracts. Prices, fees, liquidity, settlement rules and legality are all covered in our guide to NFL prediction markets, and the wider picture is in sports event contracts.

FAQ: nfl betting
When does the 2026 NFL season start and end?
The regular season kicks off on Wednesday 9 September 2026 with the Patriots at the Seahawks, and ends on 9 and 10 January 2027 (Week 18). The playoffs start on 16 January and Super Bowl LXI is on Sunday 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
What are key numbers in NFL betting?
Margins of victory that happen most often, above all 3 and 7 because of field goals and touchdowns, then 6, 10 and 14. Getting +3.5 instead of +2.5 matters a lot, so it pays to compare the half-point across sportsbooks.
What is a teaser?
A parlay where you move each spread or total in your favour (often 6 points) in exchange for lower odds. Our teaser calculator shows the break-even rate.
Do NFL bets include overtime?
Spread and total bets normally include overtime. Regular-season games can still end in a tie after overtime, and sportsbooks usually refund moneyline bets on a tie. Rules differ by book, so read the house rules before you bet.
What happens if a player I bet on doesn't play?
Most sportsbooks void a player prop if the player is inactive or doesn't take the field, and refund the stake. Some books treat a player who plays one snap as having played. Check the book's prop rules, because they differ.
What is the best NFL betting app?
FanDuel is our top pick for most bettors because of its app and same-game parlay builder. DraftKings is best for props and promos, and bet365 for live betting. Availability depends on your state.
Can I bet on the NFL with prediction markets?
In many US states you can trade NFL contracts on exchanges such as Kalshi, as well as on apps like Novig, Robinhood and FanDuel Predicts. The NFL opposes some of these contracts and several states are challenging them. See NFL prediction markets.
When is Super Bowl LXI?
Sunday 14 February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, shown on ESPN and ABC.
