Why Parlays Are So Popular (and So Hard to Win)

Small stake, huge payout, a great story when it lands. Parlays are betting's lottery ticket — and sportsbooks' favourite product.

Scroll social media on a Sunday and you'll see them: screenshots of 12-leg parlays that turned $10 into $40,000. Parlays — especially same-game parlays — have become the signature bet of the US betting boom. Here's why people love them, and why sportsbooks love them even more.

Why bettors love parlays

  • Lottery-style payouts: a few dollars can win hundreds or thousands.
  • More action: a parlay gives you a reason to care about several games — or every play of one.
  • Storytelling: an SGP lets you bet on how you think the game will unfold.
  • Near-misses: losing by one leg feels like you were almost right, which keeps people coming back.

Why sportsbooks love them more

Every leg carries the bookmaker's margin, and the margins multiply. If every leg is a true 50/50, a single −110 bet has a house edge of about 4.5% and a four-leg parlay of −110 bets about 17% (the parlay pays 13.28 to 1 for a 1-in-16 shot); SGPs often carry more. That's why US state revenue reports show sportsbooks holding a much higher percentage when customers bet more parlays.[1] Run your own numbers with the parlay calculator.

Marketing does the rest

Parlay boosts, parlay insurance, "one leg away" refunds and pre-built SGPs are everywhere in sportsbook apps. They're genuinely fun features — and they steer customers towards the highest-margin products.

How to enjoy parlays without getting burned

  1. Treat them like a lottery ticket: small, fixed stakes.
  2. Keep them short — two to four legs.
  3. Use boosts selectively, and check the price.
  4. Never chase a lost parlay with a bigger one.

Read what is a parlay? and the favourite–longshot bias — a long parlay is a homemade longshot.
