How crypto prediction markets work
Most crypto markets are price brackets: Will Bitcoin be between $95,000 and $100,000 at 5pm ET on Friday? Each bracket is a separate contract paying $1 if the price lands in it. Some are above/below questions, and others are about crypto news — legislation, ETF decisions, exchange events. You don't buy any crypto; you trade a probability. Basics in how prediction markets work.
A worked example: a Bitcoin bracket
Bitcoin trades at $97,400 on Thursday. The bracket "Bitcoin between $95,000 and $100,000 at 5pm ET Friday" costs 45¢.
- 100 contracts cost $45 plus fees.
- If Bitcoin settles inside the range, you get $100.
- If it settles at $100,001 or $94,999, you get nothing.
Compare that with owning $45 of Bitcoin: the contract pays more than double if the range holds, but nothing if the price moves even slightly outside it. Neighbouring brackets add up to roughly $1 across the whole range, so the prices show the market's full probability distribution.
Where to trade crypto markets
- Kalshi — regulated hourly, daily and weekly Bitcoin and Ether brackets with deep liquidity.
- Polymarket — the widest range of crypto questions; the US app trades in dollars.
- Crypto.com — predictions inside an exchange app, funded in fiat or crypto.
- Robinhood — selected crypto markets alongside stocks and coins.
How crypto markets settle
Price markets settle on a named index or reference rate at a precise time — not on the price you see on your favourite exchange. US exchanges typically use an independent benchmark index averaged over a short window before the settlement time, which reduces the effect of a single trade. A brief wick on one exchange may not count. Always check the source and time in the rules; see prediction market resolution.
Risks to watch
- Volatility — prices can cross several brackets in minutes.
- Timing — short-dated markets close quickly; late trades get expensive spreads.
- Manipulation concerns — in 2026 the CFTC was reported to be looking at unusual trading clusters in some crypto-linked contracts.
- Fees — frequent trading on short markets adds up; check the fee calculator.
