Popular blackjack variants
How blackjack works online
The aim is simple: beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. Cards 2–10 count at face value, picture cards count 10 and aces count 1 or 11. You can hit, stand, double, split pairs and sometimes surrender. The dealer follows fixed rules — usually hitting until 17.
Online you'll find two formats:
- RNG blackjack — a computer deals from a freshly shuffled shoe every hand. Fast, low stakes (often $1), perfect for learning.
- Live blackjack — a real dealer and real cards, streamed from a studio. More social, slower, usually higher minimums. See our live dealer casino guide.
The rules that matter most
| Rule | Good for you | Bad for you |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack payout | 3:2 | 6:5 (adds ~1.4% to the edge) |
| Dealer on soft 17 | Stands | Hits (+0.2%) |
| Double after split | Allowed | Not allowed (+0.14%) |
| Surrender | Late surrender allowed | Not offered |
| Decks | Fewer | More |
If a table pays 6:5, walk away — it's the single most expensive rule in blackjack.
Blackjack variants you'll see online
| Variant | Key rules | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic / American | Dealer peeks for blackjack; 3:2 payout | Some tables pay 6:5 |
| European | Dealer takes no hole card until players act | Doubling or splitting against an ace can lose more |
| Infinite Blackjack (live) | Unlimited players share the same first two cards | Side bets and slightly different rules |
| Free Bet Blackjack | Free doubles and splits on some hands | Dealer 22 pushes, which costs you |
| Blackjack Switch | Swap cards between two hands | Blackjack pays 1:1 |
| Spanish 21 | Tens removed, generous player bonuses | Different strategy needed |
Side bets: fun, but expensive
Live and RNG tables often offer side bets such as Perfect Pairs (your first two cards form a pair) and 21+3 (your two cards plus the dealer's up-card form a poker hand). They pay well when they hit but typically carry house edges of several percent — many times the ~0.5% edge on the main game with good rules and perfect strategy.
Where to play online blackjack
Betway has more than 50 blackjack variants on its Canadian site, spanning RNG and Evolution live tables — one of the best rooms we've reviewed for international players. In the US, BetMGM and DraftKings offer a wide range of RNG and live tables in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan, with low minimums. For more options, see our best online casinos ranking.
Play better with basic strategy
Basic strategy tells you the best move for every hand against every dealer card. Played perfectly with good rules (3:2 blackjack, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split), it brings the house edge down to about 0.5% — among the lowest in the casino. The exact chart changes with the number of decks and the table rules; these headline rules are for 4–8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split and late surrender:
- Always split aces and 8s; never split 10s or 5s.
- Double 11 against everything except an ace (with these rules).
- Stand on 13–16 against a dealer 2 to 6, and on 12 against 4 to 6; hit 12–16 against 7 or higher (or surrender 16 against 9, 10 or ace, and 15 against 10, where allowed).
- Never take insurance.

Side bets
Perfect Pairs, 21+3, Bust It and similar side bets are fun but carry house edges several times higher than the main game. If you play them, treat them as a small, separate entertainment budget.
Blackjack and bonuses
Because the edge is so low, casinos weight blackjack at just 2–8% towards bonus wagering — or exclude it. Clear bonuses on slots and play blackjack with your own cash. Details in wagering requirements explained.
