What to expect from two dice
With two six-sided dice there are 36 combinations, and the totals are not equally likely:
| Total | Combinations | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 1 | 2.8% |
| 3 or 11 | 2 | 5.6% |
| 4 or 10 | 3 | 8.3% |
| 5 or 9 | 4 | 11.1% |
| 6 or 8 | 5 | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.7% |
That is why seven is the most common total, and why it matters in games like craps. With more dice the totals cluster even more tightly around the average, which is the number of dice times 3.5 for d6.
Other dice

| d12 | 12 | 6.5 |
